If you are new enough at playing that you have to think about which string is the first and which is the 6th, start here.  This exercise will use all downward picking and will only travel in one direction across the neck, from the first to the sixth string so that you can concentrate on what you need to.

Start off with whole notes, half notes or even quarters, no faster.  Use only downward stokes with your pick trying to move slowly enough tempo to create a smooth and even tempo.  Remember: The greatest players all started out playing slowly.
